In order to make sure bugs aren't introduced in the user handling code, there are restrictions on the contents of usernames.<br />
The currently allowed characters are:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789_-

Note for auth plugin writers: Users created by auth plugins do not have the characters in their usernames checked. Failure to remove the invalid characters, especially ' (single quote), may result in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life_2:_Episode_Two unforeseen consequences].
